สมัยเรียนมัธยมต้น นั่นก็กว่า 30 ปี มาแล้ว ผมชอบไปอ่านหนังสือที่หอสมุดแห่งชาติ เพราะอยู่ใกล้โรงเรียนที่ผมเรียนอยู่ ในครั้งหนึ่งได้มีโอกาสอ่านหนังสือเล่มหนึ่งชื่อ ปลาลึกลับ นั่นทำให้ผมได้รู้จักกับ ปลาซีลลาคานท์ ซึ่งผมคิดว่ามันน่าสนใจมาก ครับ ผมจะเล่าให้คุณได้รู้จักกับมัน

หนังสือปลาลึกลับ กล่าวถึงการค้นพบปลาประหลาดตัวหนึ่งในแถบตะวันตกของมหาสมุทรอินเดีย (West Indian Ocean) ชายฝั่งตะวันออกของประเทศแอฟริกาใต้ (South Africa) ในปี ค.ศ. 1938 (พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๑) โดยเรือประมงลำหนึ่ง ไม่มีใครรู้จักมัน แต่แล้ว โลกก็ตกตะลึงกับการค้นพบโดยบังเอิญในครั้งนี้
เริ่มต้นจากที่ กัปตันของเรือประมงลำนั้นเป็นเพื่อนกับหญิงสาวผู้ดูแลพิพิธภัณฑ์ท้องถิ่นเล็กๆ ในเมือง ลอนดอน ตะวันออก (East London) เมืองท่าเรือเล็กๆ ประเทศอาฟริกาใต้ เธอมีชื่อว่า มาร์จอรี เคอร์ทนีย ละติเมอร์ (Marjorie Courtenay Latimer) เธอมักจะมาเยี่ยมเยียนเรือประมงเพื่อพูดคุยกับเขา และเลือกตัวอย่างปลาแปลกๆเพื่อไปแสดงในพิพิธภัณฑ์
ในวันที่ 22 ธันวาคม ค.ศ. 1938 หลังจากกลับจากท้องทะเล กัปตันได้โทรศัพท์เรียกมาจอรีมาพูดคุยและเลือกตัวอย่างแปลกๆเหมือนเช่นเคย และนั่นเองมันกลายเป็นเหตุการณ์ประวัติศาสตร์ มาจอรีสังเกตุเห็นปลาประหลาดครีบนำ้เงินบนเรือ แม้แต่เธอก็ไม่รู้จักมัน เธอนำมันกลับมาที่พิพิธภัณฑ์ เทียบเคียงมันกับหนังสืออ้างอิง เสก็ตภาพมันไว้และส่งให้ศาสตราจารย์ เจแอลบี สมิท (J.L.B. Smith) นักเคมีแต่เป็นผู้เชี่ยวชาญเรื่องปลา เพื่อการยืนยันความเข้าใจของเธอว่ามันคือปลาดึกดำบรรพ์ชนิดหนึ่ง
คำตอบจากสมิทกลับมาในเดือนมกราคม เขายืนยันว่ามันคือปลาสมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์จริงๆ และระบุว่ามันคือ ปลาซีลลาคานท์ (Coelacanth) !!
ปลาซีลลาคานท์ มีชื่อทางวิทยาศาสตร์ว่า Latimeria Chalumnae ซึ่งมาจากชื่อของ มาร์จอรี นั่นเอง และนับถึงก่อนหน้านั้น มันถูกพบแต่ในสภาพฟอสซิลเท่านั้น มันอยู่บนโลกมาตั้งแต่ 65 ล้านปีหรือนานกว่านั้นมาแล้ว ซึ่งนั่นก็คือมันร่วมยุคเดียวกันกับไดโนเสาร์ (Dinosaur) นั่นเอง จึงไม่แปลกที่บางคนเรียกมันว่า ปลาไดโนเสาร์ (Dinofish) มันถูกเหมารวมว่าสูญพันธ์ไปนานแล้ว เช่นเดียวกับไดโนเสาร์ จนกระทั่งการค้นพบครั้งสำคัญนี้ ลองจินตนาการดูซิว่า ถ้ามีการค้นพบไดโนเสาร์ที่ยังมีชีวิตอยู่ มันจะให้ความรู้สึกเช่นไรกับคุณ
ซีลลาคานท์ซึ่งโตเต็มที่จะมีความยาวได้ถึง 2 เมตร น้ำหนัก 90 กิโลกรัม มีช่วงชีวิตได้ถึง 60 ปี ลักษณะเด่นที่สำคัญคือครีบหลายคู่ ที่ดูเหมือนจะงอกออกจากแขนขา ไม่ได้เชื่อมติดกับลำตัวโดยตรง และส่วนหางที่ดูเหมือนมีหางเล็กงอกจากหางใหญ่อีกที
ซีลลาคานท์กลายเป็นหัวข้อร้อนแรงของ 2 ขั้วความคิด นักวิทยาศาสตร์บางส่วนเสนอว่ามันอาจจะเป็นส่วนเชื่อมที่หายไปในสายการวิวัฒนาการจากทะเลสู่บก เพราะลักษณะครีบที่คล้ายขานั่นเอง ซึ่งยังเป็นที่ถกเถียงกันอยู่ เช่นในปี 2013 ( พ.ศ. ๒๕๕๖ ) มีการศึกษาทางพันธุกรรมด้วยการถอดจีโนม(Genome) ซึ่งสรุปว่า ปลาปอด (Lung Fish) ต่างหากที่มีความใกล้เคียงกับการเชื่อมสายวิวัฒนาการดังกล่าว ไม่ใช่ซีลลาคานท์
ส่วนฝ่ายพวกนับถือพระเจ้าอย่างรุนแรงซึ่งปฏิเสธหลักวิวัฒนาการของ ชารลส์ ดาร์วิน ( Charles Darwin ) และเชื่อว่าพระเจ้าเป็นผู้สร้างทุกสิ่ง ก็จะใช้ ซีลลาคานท์มาสนับสนุนความเชื่อและหักล้างทฤษฎีของ ดาร์วิน เพราะซีลลาคานท์เปลี่ยนแปลงน้อยมากในเวลาที่ผ่านมาอันแสนนานนี้
ในปัจจุบัน ซีลลาคานท์ถูกนับเป็นสัตว์ใกล้สูญพันธ์แล้วจริงๆ มันถูกพบน้อยและยากมาก แหล่งที่อยู่ นอกจากมหาสมุทรอินเดนทางตะวันตก แถบหมู่เกาะคอโมรอสทางตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ของอาฟริกาแล้ว ก็ยังพบนอกชายฝั่งสุลาเวสี อินโดนีเซียเท่านั้น (เป็นอีกสายพันธ์) มันถูกประมาณว่าเหลืออยู่เพียง 1,000 ตัวเท่านั้น!!
โดยส่วนตัว ผมคิดว่า ปลาซีลลาคานท์และการค้นพบมัน เป็นสิ่งที่น่าสนใจมาก และคิดว่ามันน่าจะเป็นประโยชน์บ้างต่อเด็กๆที่จะรับรู้เรื่องราวของมัน จึงเขียนบทความนี้ขึ้นมา

I have found there is not much articles about this fascinating fish in Thai language. So this is my attempt to add the compelling episode about this fish and its discovery for Thai readers. For those of you reading my English version, you might find more details of it in heaps of English articles in the internet, for example, www.dinofish.com. Anyway, here is my article about it.
When I was in high school 30 years ago, I liked to visit the National Library in Bangkok located just nearby to my school. One day, I came across a book titled 'Mysterious Fish'. I enjoyed reading it so much and found the book was interesting. So this is a story of that book.
The book is about the discovery of a mysterious fish in the West Indian Ocean, south eastern coast of South Africa in 1938. No one recognised what specie the fish really was. Then, the world was startled with this discovery!
It began with the captain of a fish trawler who befriended a young lady named
Marjorie Courtenay Latimer. She was a curator of a local small museum in East London, a small port in South Africa. The captain frequently asked her to visit his boat for social talk and she would take animal specimens from his boat to display at the museum.
On 22 December 1938, after coming back from the sea, the captain rang to invite her as usual. And so the history was made. She noticed a big fish with blue fins in a pile of other fishes which she thought it was unusual, then took it back to the museum. She checked it with the text books, roughly sketched it and sent the sketch to Professor J.L.B Smith, a chemist who was also a fish expert to confirm her thinking that it was a prehistoric fish.
The answer from Smith came back in January to confirm her claim. Yes, it was indeed a prehistoric fish. He also identified it as Coelacanth!
Latimeria chalumnae is the Coelacanth scientific name which of course was derived after Majorie's name. It was recognised only in fossil forms before that day. It was on earth 65 million years ago or even before that. Yes, it had existed in the same period as dinosaurs. So it was not unusual several people called it a dinofish. Of course, it was also assumed to be extinct like dinosaurs before its living sample discovery! Could you try imagining there is an discovery of living dinosaur in our time, regardless of types. What would be your feeling hearing such news?
A grown up Coelacanth can measure 2 meters long and weigh 90 Kgs. Its life span is about 60 years. Its outstanding appearance is several pairs of fins protruding from limbs, not from its body like other fishes, and also an additional small tail stemming from its big tail.
Coelacanth has become somewhat a hot topic between two extreme ends of continuum. Some scientists believe that Coelacanth is a missing link of the line of evolution between sea creatures and amphibians because of its leg resembling fins. This is still debatable. For example, there is a research about gnome of coelacanth in 2013 which concluded that Lung Fish, not Coelacanth , should be such a link.
On the other hand, Creationists who are people extremely believe everything in universe created by God, will use Coelacanth as an example to refute Charles Darwin theory of Natural Selection because Coelacanth has changed so little over this eon of period.
Right now, Coelacanth is indeed regarded as endanger species! It was hardly found in its two areas of habitant, which is Comoros Island, West Indian Ocean, and the sea near Sulawesi, Indonesia which is another relative species. There has been an estimation that there are only 1,000 of them left around the world.
I myself have obsessed with the Coelacanth and its discovery, and would like to convey this remarkable fish story to the kids in Thailand. Therefore, this article was written. If you feel the same way with me please search further in google and YouTube for more details.
