As a big Liverpool fan for more than 30 years, I will write about a great Liverpool legend as my debut article for this blog. Of course, for current era, Steven Gerrard is the man whom we think of. And for the greatest of them all, Kenny Dalglish would certainly be on top of every Liverpool fan's favorite list. I myself praise them highly as well.
My all time favorite, however, is the man standing in front of goal bar during that conquering 70s to early 80s period. Yes I am referring to the great goal keeper Ray Clemence.
In Wikipedia, Clemence is acclaimed as one of the most decorated goal keeper in history, having won all domestic and European trophies with Liverpool and later Spur. You can name it , First Division (now Premier League), FA Cup, League Cup, Eufa Cup, and European Cup (now Champion League), only Cup Winner's Cup and the World Football Club Champion that were missed out!
I still have clear memory of those days when Clemence had to fiercely compete with Peter Chilton for the England goal keeper spot. The sadness is still coming to my mind everytime thinking of when Chilton finally became first choice for England selection early 80s. I, nevertheless, still have my consolation. Comparing the defeat of Chilton by Maradona for that Goal of the century in 1986, Clemence was facing a similar run like this in friendly match between England and Argentina in 1980 only that he narrowly escaped that humiliation by the Argentile Legend. Furthermore, in my humble opinion, Chilton seemed too slow for the Hand of God goal.
Having said that, at that time it was regarded as the golden age of England Goal Keepers starting from the Great Gordon Banks, and to me, ending with the departure of David Seaman. England has never had the Goal keepers at that calibre since then. Likewise, after the lack of relying goal keepers, the great period of Liverpool also came to an end.
What makes Clemence my all time favorite is that in his hay day, besides other general aspects of good goal keepers, he had the speed to come out of the zone to tackle the opponents. And most of the times, it worked very well. Nowadays, we may generally see the German Goal Keepers, Manuel Neuer, doing this. But for the past Liverpool fan like myself, we know that Ray Clemence was famous about this skill before. Some reporters even called him the Extra Sweeper. I do not see this much in Thai websites when addressing about Ray Clemence.
Even in the later time of his career, Clemence was still having all abilities of the good keeper. I still remember in the ending minutes of the final FA Cup match between Spurs and Coventry in 1987 when Clemence made a supersave against a solo run by a Coventry forward, the very famous Thai commentator yelled the word ' This is Ray Clemence' . Same comment came from an English commentator that it was an outstanding save. Do not forget that he was 39 year of age at that time. This,to me, summed up how great he was.
I always regard Ray Clemence as the foundation for the conquering Liverpool team. Now, Clemence is nearly 67 years old, came out recently victorious in battle with cancer, ending his role in senior England coaching team. Last year (2014) he was inducted in Spurs Hall of Fame, continue to be highly praised by both Liverpool and Spurs fans. Furthermore, he still appears in everyone all time best Liverpool team and waits for the new fans to explore. Of course, he is always my Greatest Goal Keeper.

แม้กระทั่งในช่วงปลายอาชีพ คลีเมนซ์ก็ยังมีคุณสมบัติครบถ้วนของยอดนายทวาร ผมยังจำได้ในช่วงสุดท้ายของนัดชิงเอฟเอคัพ ปี 1987 ระหว่างสเปอร์ กับ โคเวนตรี้ เมื่อคลีเมนซ์ป้องกันลูกหลุดเดี่ยวของโคเวนตรี้สำเร็จ ย โย่งผู้ล่วงลับซึ่งพากย์บอลในวันนั้นถึงกับตะโกนออกอากาศว่า "นี่คือ เรย์ คลีเมนซ์!!" นั่นเป็นการสรุปความสุดยอดของคลีเมนซ์ได้เป็นอย่างดี
สำหรับผม เรย์ คลีเมนซ์คือขุมพลังเบื้องต้นของลิเวอร์พูลในยุคเกรียงไกร ในปัจจุบัน เรย์ คลีเมนซ์ อายุย่างเข้า ๖๗ ปี ผ่านการต่อสู้เอาชนะโรคมะเร็งมาแล้วเมื่อเร็วๆนี้ ยุติบทบาทการเป็นโคชผู้รักษาประตูทีมชาติอังกฤษในปี ๒๕๕๖ ล่าสุดได้รับการบรรจุชื่อในหอเกียรติยศของนักเตะทีมสเปอร์เมื่อปีที่แล้ว (๒๕๕๗) และยังคงได้รับการยกย่องจากแฟนบอลทั้งสองทีมอย่างต่อเนื่อง ยังคงอยู่ในทุกๆโพลล์ความเห็น ๑๑ สุดยอดหงส์ ยังคงรอคอยให้แฟนหงส์รุ่นใหม่ได้ค้นหาทำความรู้จัก และแน่นอนยังคงอยู่ในความทรงจำของผมตลอดไป
